What Is Insect Shield?
Insect Shield® for pets are revolutionary products designed to provide long-lasting, effective and convenient personal insect protection. The durable protection provided by Insect Shield gear is the result of years of research and testing. In July 2003, Insect Shield Repellent was registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Insect Shield products combine the patent-pending Insect Shield process with a proprietary formulation of the insect repellent permethrin — resulting in effective insect protection that lasts the expected lifetime of a product.
How did permethrin originate, and what are its uses?
The Insect Shield process binds a proprietary permethrin formula tightly to fabric fibers — resulting in effective, odorless insect protection that lasts the expected lifetime of gear. Permethrin has been successfully used in the United States as an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered product since 1977, with an excellent safety record. It is used in lice shampoos for children, flea dips for dogs, and various other products, some of which are regulated by the FDA.
Which insects does Insect Shield repel?
Insect Shield® Repellent gear has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums). Insect Shield® Repellent Gear has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies. The EPA requires extensive effectiveness data to prove a product's ability to repel insects. Many species and varieties of these insects have been tested, including those that can carry dangerous diseases.
What are the benefits of Insect Shield vs. other forms of pet insect protection?
Insect Shield for pets puts insect repellency near your dog’s skin, instead of directly on it, and the protection is invisible. Also, the repellency is long lasting, so no re-application is needed. Insect Shield does not have to enter into your dog’s system for it to be effective. Nor, do the insects have to bite in order for the protection to work. You simply have to put Insect Shield gear on your pet or have them use the products and it helps ward off a variety of pesky and dangerous insects. Insect Shield protection is bonded to the textile so it cannot be rubbed off.
Tested and Proven
Insect Shield technology results from years of intensive research and field study. Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of permethrin-treated clothing as an insect repellent. Insect Shield’s own testing methods follow United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, and the results conclusively show that our unique, long-lasting insect protection works.
Who recommends permethrin-treated gear?
The following international agencies recommend insect-repellent gear:
- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), www.cdc.gov/travel The World Health Organization (WHO), www.who.int
- National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/lyme/

Use Insect Shield pet products in conjunction with other forms of protection
Insect Shield pet gear is a great alternative to other forms of protection and can be used in conjunction with them for optimal protection.
The repellency of Insect Shield gear is EPA-registered to last through 25 launderings — the expected lifetime of a product. This is also well beyond the life of most performance finishes commonly used in the technical-gear industry.
